Early bluebells

It was so exciting to see these early Bluebells in an ancient woodland.

Usually my poetry tends to be freeverse however in one of my notebooks I came across an example of a ‘Rectum refrain and decided to write my Early Blue bell poem using the Rectum refrain style.

So basically a poem written in the above style should have 10 lines. The first line contains one syllable only, the second 2 syllables and so on. However line 10 should contain a combination of lines 1-4 thus making 10 syllables. No rhyming!

It was a challenge. I hope I got it right! However producing a poem about the experience I had of that walk, coming across the wood and Hawthorn blossom and using my senses and imagination, was far more important to me. I hope you enjoy it.

Early Bluebells

Blue,

Blue bells.

Blue bells shake.

Chilly winds wake,

Woodland creatures hide.

Twigs, new shoots lime green, fresh.

Blossom pure, delicate, intense

Hawthorn spike in dark hollows shine

Glassy eyed rabbits shy waiting. Still.

Blue blue bells blue bells shake chilly -winds wake

Midsummer cheers…

Midsummer meadows cheers our hearts.

Bees reeling in floppy poppies,

Quaint corn cockles and radiant daisies jostle with lazy scabious

Lofty butterflies surf the breeze filled with meadowsweet mist.

Wishing seeds glimmer in honeyed rays,

Teazels  sentinels of the fields, guard the wildflower maze.

Haystacks rest on dusty fields waiting for midsummer to heal.

Enjoy midummer days and long warm evenings.

Poppy walk

Sunny morning,

Swifts soaring;

Dog rose scented air.

Maiden’s garlands,

wedding bells afar.

Harebells & summer fairs

Dancing campions,

Wild flower champion

The scarlet poppy!

Dreamy Meadow

Lazily, toe by toe,

Treading on wispy grasses;

Soft silk bed of fresh miniature flora.

Soaring high –

 Skylarks, their

Singing lingers like lover’s whispers

Before vanishing through dreamy vapours.

Cow parsley’s filigree fountains

Shower the wake of Ox Eye daisies.

Hazy white petals slightly dazed,

Enjoy sherbet scented kissing wind.

Wild briar rose

Wild briar rose,Sun soaked face,

Petals as sheer as fine lace;

Like a dancer on tip toes

Wearing silky pink bows,

Silently pirouetting.

Suddenly a brazen breeze

Brings a helter shelter of

Hawthorn mizzle.

She shelters under a petal glaze

Forlorly marooned in scented dew.

Tallow rays

The misty morn peels,

Revealing sentinels of wintery fields.

Tallow rays, like a sweet mead glaze

Healing: a warming haze.

Treading through the meadow, footsteps as light as a fae,

Amazingly, brightening the day,

A pretty, pixie flower called sweet violet

Appears alone, shielded by the sleeping hedgerow

And wrapped with ivy and bay.

Tranquility among the grasses

image

Bashfully passing through
Languishing grasses,
As peeping, floppy poppies
Leap and dive like dashing
Flamenco dancers.

Calming Cowslips

image

Calming cowslips,
A remedy of old:
Sip three spoonfuls of flowers
Steeped in a powerful mead.

Time for a bountiful spring we’re told.
Yellow fairy bells in sparkling ruby finery,
Tinkling on a breezy evening
As golden sunshine winks and leaves.

Amethyst torches

Pyramidal Orchids

Like Amethyst torches,

Glimmering high in

The chalk passes,

Where shimmering faeries

Dance to the sound

Of lyrical Skylarks.

I love these beautiful wild orchids (Anacamptis pyramidalis). On our walks it is often difficult not to walk on them!  These little magical torches of the fairy world are scattered over the chalky downs of the Chiltern hills.
